Grès d'Alsace

History of Betschdorf Pottery Pottery is one of the oldest activities in human history. Among the most iconic ceramics, Betschdorf stoneware holds a special place due to its exceptional quality and unique aesthetic. This technique, known in China more than a millennium ago, made its appearance in Europe during the Middle Ages. In 1706, the records of the village of Betschdorf mention a potter for the first time, named Dankil. In 1717, another name appears, Spitz. However, it was not until 1734 that Peter Wingerter and Johannes Krummeich, originally from Westerwald (Germany), settled permanently in Betschdorf, thus beginning the local tradition of stoneware pottery. ________________________________________
